Welcome to Hooked on Walking Holidays and our walking holidays in Slovenia. This hiking tour is within the region of North west Slovenia more commonly known as the Julian Alps. This walking holiday in the Julian Alps we have graded as a level 2 self guided tour. The starting location is Kranjska Gora a wonderful Alpine town not far from the Austrian Border and in the foothills of the Julian Alps. This region is fabulous for hiking , great forests , gushing rivers and waterfalls in wonderful emerald green colour.

DAY 1 ARRIVAL TO PODKOREN.
Arrival to Podkoren an alpine village in the vicinity of Kranjska Gora with beautiful scenery of Western Julian Alps. Kranjska Gora is well Known for its winter sports with World Cup slaloms which are held here every January. Overnight in a village hotel. Walking holiday in Slovenia

DAY 2 PODKOREN – THREE COUNTRIES POINT - PODKOREN 8.1 miles , 13 km up 640m

This “warming up” walk takes you to Mount Peč, a 1508m high summit which borders between Slovenia, Italy and Austria. At the summit you have a magnificent viewpoint, it offers great vistas of Julian Alps and Carnian Alps as well as Hohe Tauern in distance. After returning to the valley, the trail leads you to the source of longest Slovenian river, the Sava and finally below ski slopes of Kranjska Gora ski resort back to starting point. Today you have walked through some lovely alpine pastures and forests. Overnight in a village hotel.

DAY 3 PODKOREN - KRANJSKA GORA – MARTULJEK – PODKOREN 11.8 miles, 19 km up 500m

There are many interesting spots on this days’ hike. First a visit is paid to Kranjska Gora, a well known Slovenian Alpine resort. Leaving the village one enters the Jasna valley. Ending it on the southern side are the picturesque mountains of Prisank and Razor. The early afternoon walk through a forest covered alpine valley leads to Lower Martuljek waterWalking holiday in the Julian Alpsfall, a mayor natural monument, underneath the sheer rock face of Mount Špik at 2400m. The returning path to Podkoren goes upstream and along Sava river valley. Overnight in a village hotel.

DAY 4 RADOVNA VALLEY – VINTGAR GORGE - LAKE BLED 8.1 miles 13 km up  200m

This is a resort changing day! Kranjska Gora to Bled . After a short car transfer through the Radovna valley, the days walk begins. The route follows the wonderful unspoilt stream of the Radovna river all the way to its natural treasure the Vintgar gorge, a mile long canyon with a 30m waterfall on the end. Finally the walk goes past the Katarina church viewpoint through the world famous Lake Bled resort and your destination, a romantic small village of Selo, some 2 km from towns’ centre. Overnight in a family owned hotel.

DAY 5 SELO – BOHINJSKA BELA – LAKE BLED 6.8 miles 11 km / total ascend up 270m

A day to explore Bled, its lake, island church with “The bell of wishes”, the castle on the rock. A short panoramic walk can be taken to the villages of Kupljenik and Bela. Photographers will want to ascend Osojnica, best photos of the lake, castle and Karawanke range can be taken from here in the afternoon light. One must is to stop at the Park hotel and sample the famous cake. Overnight in a family owned hotel.Julian Alps Walking Holiday

DAY 6 POKLJUKA – USKOVNICA SADLE – VOJE – LAKE BOHINJ 7.5 miles 12 km / total up 200m.

First you will have a short car transfer to the top of Pokljuka high plateau, here a 7.5 mile downhill walk to Lake Bohinj starts. This high plateau is a good starting point for more demanding tours. Hiking across mountain pastures, farmers lodges to high viewing points of Bohinj valley can be seen. In Studor village a farmers museum can be visited, set in an old, intact farmhouse. See how people of the region lived 150 years ago. Overnight in 4 star hotel.

DAY 7. LAKE BOHINJ 8 miles 13 km. Lakeside / valley walk.

A day for rest or an easy hike around Lake Bohinj (in the summer months one can swim in its' crystal clear waters). Also to be visited are the Savica waterfall, 70m high source of Sava Bohinjka river. As a side trip, a cable car ride up Vogel mountain, 1532m high can be taken. And perhaps local pubs with excellent lake trout. Overnight in 4 star hotel.

DAY 8. Departure after breakfast.

Difficulty: This tour is in high mountains but generally walking at low levels or downhill after a transfer. The walking tour is graded level 2 .

From the airport you can take a train to Jesenice and then a short Taxi ride , on the return trip from Bled-Lesco to Ljubjana ( Total traveling time around 1 hour ).
