Welcome to Hooked on Walking Holidays and our walking holidays in Austria. This hiking vacation in Austria is a level 2-3 self guided walking tour. At the foot of the Magic Mountains around 40 miles south west of Vienna there are many summer holiday villages from the times of the Hapsburg Monarchy. Time had seemed to have forgotten this region. The UNESCO Heritage Semmering train has added new life to the region. These are the mountains of Viennese climbers, where many a famous Austrian mountaineer started his career climbing to an elevation of more than 2.000m. An intricate network of hiking paths and climbing routes access these mountains of magical beauty. The Semmering Railway, built over 41 km of high mountains between 1848 and 1854, is one of the greatest feats of civil engineering from this pioneering phase of railway building. The high standard of the tunnels, viaducts and other works has ensured the continuous use of the line up to the present day. It runs through a spectacular mountain landscape and there are many fine buildings designed for leisure activities along the way, built when the area was opened up due to the advent of the railway.
